Research and Development

Areas of Research

Our research covers four main areas – from sustainability and greening to safety, and advanced SMART materials and digital technologies.

DECARBONIZATION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Sustainability

We develop innovative construction binders and materials for modern, sustainable building with minimal environmental impact. Our focus is on reducing the emission and energy intensity of production, efficient use of primary resources, recycling, and utilization of secondary raw materials. Simultaneously, we extend the lifespan of building materials and address the quality of indoor environments in buildings, ensuring that new constructions meet high demands for ecology, health, and long-term durability.

Decarbonization and CO₂ Technologies

We are involved in the development of new binders, composite materials, and technologies with lower CO₂ emissions. Our focus is on reducing the clinker factor in cement, utilizing supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), alternative fuels and raw materials, and low-energy clinkers in cooperation with the cement industry. The research also includes alternative binders, unconventional production methods, and possibilities for CO₂ mineralization, utilization, and sequestration.

Reducing energy intensity

We are analyzing options for reducing energy consumption during both production and operation. Solutions utilizing renewable energy sources and new eco-design approaches are supported. This includes the implementation of new locally available supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) (calcined clays, natural pozzolans). We help develop low-carbon cements by reducing firing temperatures through the use of fluxes and clinker mineralizers. We also study the impact of alternative fuels on clinker properties.
