Since 1946, we have been shaping the future of research
Our history began shortly after World War II, and we have been continuously developing ever since. From the development of new building materials and the recycling of raw materials to safety technologies, we demonstrate how science, innovation, and responsibility towards the future can be combined.

History that shaped us
Since our inception, we have gone through several stages that reflect the development of construction and the needs of society as a whole. Our history is a story of innovation, responsible research, and collaboration with both industry and academia. Each period has brought us closer to our current focus on sustainability and safety.
The Building Materials Research Institute was founded in 1946 by Otakar Kallauner Jr. as a research facility of the Czechoslovak Building Materials and Ceramics Industry Plants. In the 1950s, the institute focused on researching raw materials and industrial waste for building material production. In 1955, the foundation of EKOPROGRAM was laid, focusing on the recycling of waste raw materials. In 1962, an experimental facility with new lime firing technology was established in Čebín, later transformed into the Experimental Cement Plant.
In the 1960s and 1970s, activities focused on aerated concrete, mineral wool, and the development of fire-resistant boards. The institute also participated in the design and supply of complete production lines for building materials. In the 1980s, research was oriented towards fuel savings and the utilization of lower-grade fuels and industrial waste. Asbestos-free technologies were developed, important for health and environmental protection.
After 1990, the company transformed into a joint-stock company. In 1992, the analytical chemistry laboratories were accredited by ČIA. Since 2000, eco-innovations and industrial waste processing became the core research program. Research focused not only on the preparation of new building materials but also on assessing their technological and environmental suitability.
Since 2010, VÚSH has been a recognized research organization. In 2011, it received an honorable mention in the Innovation of the Year competition for the development of special lime. Since 2012, research has expanded to include population protection, critical infrastructure, and security. Awards include, for example, Visionary of the Year 2014 for the development of anti-blast litter bins.
In 2020, the company's ownership structure changed. Since 2023, VÚSH has been accelerating research activities in the field of eco-innovation and developing a new strategy. In 2024, this strategy was linked to the Circular Czech Republic 2040 Strategic Framework and its focus on sustainability, decarbonization, and the circular economy was strengthened.
